Going Host Shopping
Posted on March 17th, 2007 in Project Development) by Lars-Christian |
I am currently on the lookout for a new host for Bloggst, as Site5 doesn’t cut it - I need something more stable, and faster. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to share it with me. Obviously I am not taking this lightly, seeing how a host is to a website what breathing is to a person.
I need something that is as good as downtime free, can withstand a huge spike in traffic (like for instance a Digg, as I want to be prepared should that ever happen), and of course it can’t be too expensive. $20 - $40 per month is where I’m looking at. Share your suggestions people ![]()

Site5 doesn’t cut it? Damn, that’s a lot of stuff for five bucks. I get next to nothing compared to that. 5 bucks gets me 5 gigs of space, 100 gigs of bandwidth, and five domains. Hell, I’d cancel my plan (if I weren’t bound with a two year contract) to get that nice deal. Is it so unstable that it isn’t worth it?
This is the place I buy hosting from: http://www.hostingzoom.com/
It’s very stable, practically always up. They just did a major server upgrade, so things run even better and MORE stable than they did beforehand. If you’re looking for stability, go with them, albeit they seem much more expensive than Site5.
That said, the amazing price of Site5 is what surprised me - I still love HostingZoom for how stable their systems are and how reliable both their uptime and their customer support (yes, they have good customer support!) is. The only downside to their support is the silly chat-with-a-representative thing, which nobody is ever around to answer, but they always answer emails promptly.
Actually, if ZW.org keeps growing at its current monthly rate, I’m soon going to have to move to the $8-per-month plan.
I looked around at some places and saw that Site5 IS very unstable… I’m actually surprised, one person said this:
“Also from personal experience, Site5’s servers aren’t that reliable, the monitors on their website show this. The server that I once upon a time had an account on shows that there have been 278 outages, an avg. response time of 330.1977 ms, AND 6 outages this month alone.”
So, knowing that, I can faithfully and confidently say “check out HostingZoom.” Never had to deal with a downtime problem I wasn’t pre-notified about by email. ;)… and that was the “server upgrade” email, by the way.
Thanks for the suggestion Jason! I’ve had a couple of reccomended hosts which I’m looking into right now. Should make my decision soon. Most likely though, I will keep my blog on Site5 for now though, mainly because I want to seperate Bloggst completely from the rest of the more hobby-stuff that I do, and because Site5 hardly costs anything, I’ll have to give them that
I’ve been hearing good things about Destxhost from other webmasters I know who run high traffic forums and it seems to be affordable with a lot of great perks.
You can check them out here: http://www.destxhost.com/
I use these guys and they have been great: http://rimuhosting.com/
i use http://www.exmasters.com they have really good deals and allow hosting with unlimited domains… nicccce..!
Thanks for all the good suggestions guys, I appreciate it. I still haven’t decided on a new host, so I will be checking out all the ones that have been suggested, and pick the one that seems most reliable from the information I can digg up on it.
I too started typing digg with two g’s!
