Youtube rabbit holes: electric guitar edition
I fell down a youtube rabbit hole. Ended up spending the better part of an evening watching electric guitar covers of various songs and riffs from the eighties and nineties.
There's something intimately human about amateurs sharing their best efforts at something, flaws and all. It's inspiring.
Then you come across stuff like this 14 year old guitar cover of I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses that absolutely blows your mind. As the top comment says:
I’ve watched this video more than 100 times, and I have come to the fact that this man is John Squire.
Squire, for reference, is the guitarist of The Stone Roses.
I'm dumbfounded that someone can sit down in their living room and put together something like that.
Then I venture through the comments and find that the artist's child has posted this, in response to a question of why the artist hasn't published more videos:
I actually know this answer already, he actually got logged out of this account years ago and has forgotten the password and hasn’t tried to make a new one. My dad has had commitments elsewhere with his main job. It’s been busy years for him so he never got the chance or had the time to make any more videos.
It is both absurd and, at the same time, makes complete sense.
Here's to wildly talented artists doing it only for the art!
