More WordPress/ActivityPub trouble

I noticed yesterday that ActivityPub replies from Mastodon weren’t being pulled in by my WordPress installation. Not sure what’s causing it, but I’ve requested assistance from the plugin developer.

Must admit it’s getting a little tiresome that something breaks seemingly every time I log on to this site. I’m starting to wonder if just going with static HTML/CSS might be a more enjoyable approach.

Update 4 July: After trying to figure out what’s going on for two days, I’ve disabled federation through the ActivityPub plugin. With caching, without caching, it doesn’t seem to matter. I can’t get replies from Mastodon to come through consistently.

I’m just not sufficiently technically minded to get it to work properly and without hitches. Hopefully the smart guys will work out all of these kinks. I’ll try it again in a year or two.

  1. @blog seems like an odd direction to go considering that a static site would not respond to such replies either.

Also, your notes link does not work at all. Just a blank page on my mobile. I think your issue is more server configuration related than any WordPress plugin.

    1. Yeah, but it would at least give me one less headache ๐Ÿ˜‰ And funnily enough, your response came through now.

And that’s unfortunate. It could very well be server related, but the frustrating aspect is that it works one day, and then it doesn’t the next. Even if I don’t make any changes. And as far as these troubles go, all of them are rooted in the ActivityPub plugin and the various responses your site is supposed to serve based on parameters of the request. Not using a cache isn’t really a solution, either, because the Masto stampede will crush basically any server setup when your content is being federated.

I love the idea of ActivityPub, but based on my experience, the WP implementation is a long way away from being ready for prime time.
