Be an online property owner
Den Delimarsky in Be A Property Owner And Not A Renter On The Internet:
Buy a domain and host your own website. It really doesn’t matter what you use for either the domain purchase or the hosting, as long as it’s your property. You can start with any of the site builders, host your own blog engine, or even use a static site generator like me. But as long as you have your own stake in the ground, you’re off to a good start.
I honestly believe that one of the most impactful ways to fight for democracy is working to decentralise the internet again. It is clear that the status quo means ceding all control to people happy to abolish democratic values for the sake of increasing profits.
What's the solution, you ask? We don't need blockchains and smart contracts or reinvented social protocols. The technology is already there. Websites built by humans, for humans, on domains owned by humans. That's it.
We need to normalise people paying to own their own small space on the internet again. We need to make these the places people go to voice their opinions. We need to use these to share other people's opinions. We need to understand that "free" is not free, but instead a price as high as sacrificing foundational values that our societies were once built upon.
Spending a lot of time these days thinking about how I play my part in this movement. For now, I encourage you to go read Den's post.
