Seth Godin in The use (and design) of tools:
In the last decade, we’ve outfitted billions of people with tools that didn’t exist until recently. And because of market pressure, the design of these tools is very different.
I think Seth is spot on here. One thing that he doesn't mention explicitly is that many of these tools are, indeed, crap. So take his advice to "insist on software that’s worth the time it takes to learn."
