I’ve published the privacy policy page. My goal is to make it clear exactly what tracking I employ on my personal website, and how you can opt out. I very much welcome suggestions on how to improve and make it even clearer.

The Complete Robot

Hybrid presentations and video content
I’ve never attended a hybrid presentation where video content works well. Video is always choppy to the point of being unwatchable. Amazingly, if there’s a video feed of the presenter featuring a big screen, squinting on this screen works better.
Is this just an MS Teams thing, or a general problem for all these platforms?

Almost there
OK I’m 90% satisfied with the look and feel of the site now. Archives and single notes and links are exactly what I want. Posts archive and single posts don’t feel quuuite right yet…
It’s enough that I can stop spending all my free time messing around with it, thought. Right? Right?!

WordPress admin on mobile
The WordPress admin interface works surprisingly well on mobile. Even on my tiny old iPhone 12 mini screen. No trouble at all posting notes from a phone.

A week in the woods
I’ve spent this entire week in a cabin in the woods with just my wife and two children.
Up at five in the morning to write before the others wake up. Get in an hour of cross-country skiing during the day, and spend the remainder messing around with the kids. After they’ve gone to bed I just play around with this website and get in a bit of reading.
What a beautiful life.

A bit of housekeeping
I’ve not been entirely happy with the initial setup of this site. The front page didn’t quite do it, and “Notes” ended up drowned out by “Links”.
To remedy this, I’ve split “Notes” and “Links” into distinct content types. And I’ve switched up the front page to (hopefully) make it clearer and improve discovery. The archive pages also got a little makeover.
Will do a full post on it to share my thoughts more in-depth.

Things don’t tend to go exactly as planned. …
Things don’t tend to go exactly as planned. Yesterday was day one of trying to implement not just a new habit, but a new lifestyle and sleep pattern. A few hours after posting that, they called from daycare to let me know the littlest one was not feeling well.
Nothing that’s followed since has been conducive to working on new habits. But, I still managed to squeeze in 15 minutes of writing, so I’m gonna give myself a pass.

I’ve successfully migrated the site from a Cloudways instance to a custom managed droplet with DigitalOcean. Hurrah! No unforeseen hiccups along the way, either. With that useful piece of procrastination, I can get back to finishing that next post on ActivityPub.

Been having a bit of trouble with caching …
Been having a bit of trouble with caching and the ActivityPub integration. Can’t quite get to grips with it, because I don’t know all the stuff going on with the server on my Cloudways instance. So decided to just spin up a clean DigitalOcean droplet for hosting this site going forward.
Setting that up this weekend. When what I really should be doing is writing. Oh well!

My favourite part of putting together a family highlights video after each year is picking out the various songs for the soundtrack. Every song is a little piece of me that I’m sharing with the kids. A little thread that they can — sometime in the future — pull on if they want to explore something that meant a lot to their father.
