Felt like the legs moved at a decent clip, but HR was unusually low. I think this down week is much needed. First run in the Adios Pro 2. Very good shoe. Immediately a bit reminded of the Alphafly with that wide forefoot print, but not as a clunky. Looks like I forgot to switch to indoor mode on the Stryd app 😅 These old OG Vaporfly have 700+ km on them, but are still excellent for running on the tread. Quality shoes! (Even if I had to tape the upper to hold it together a couple of runs.) Decent 12 week build from “broken knee” and no mileage to highest weekly mileage of 2021. Now I just need a full year of consistency at this level, and I might get somewhere with my PBs.

Spent an hour forty five looking at ground contact time balance, trying to get a feel for a balanced stride feel like. Not sure I’m much wiser, but I absolutely obliterated my calves in the process. Had to hang my head in shame and walk home. I’ll be lucky to run again at all next week! I don’t know which muscles I’ve been using to power my forward movement while running the last few years, but it surely isn’t the calves. Back to the drawing board here. Will probably need half a year of re-training before I can run upwards of 100 km week again, if I’m going to try to adjust to a more balanced gait.

Trying to figure out the mechanical quirks behind my L/R imbalance. I think the penny finally dropped. Left foot is essentially dead from the ankle down. No movement, no toe-off. I’m practically limping! Which perfectly explains the persistent L47%-R53% imbalance I’ve had for years. Toeing off with left foot feels incredibly awkward, and I immediately feel it in my knee. But I’m guessing that the atrophied ankle and foot are probably also the cause of my knee problem to begin with.

Nothing quite like the feeling of losing fitness week after week! 😏 Did a comparison between the Endorphin Pro (rep 1 and 3) and a pair of old Vaporfly Next% w/ 200+ km on them. It’s not even close for me, the Vaporfly feels like a much faster shoe. Endorphin Pro is heavier and clunkier, stiffer in the transition and nowhere near as bouncy and snappy as the Vaporfly.

The plan was 8k continuous. I knew after 1k that it wasn’t going to happen. Had my hands full getting through this alternative workout. Woke up absolutely battered by allergies. That probably played a part, as shown by the sky high heart rate. Happy enough to get through an OK session on a day when the body isn’t cooperating. Saucony Endorphin Speed is a good shoe, but it feels like it comes up a bit short once I get down towards 3:30/km pace. I feel that a stiffer, more aggressive plate shines makes a real difference in this territory.

Met up with Stian for most of the first half. Stomach was acting up, so had to run home for a toilet break around halfway 😩 Legs held up deceptively well for around 70 minutes, but after that it became a struggle. Obvious that the pace is too hot, based on the back half. Will try to learn, but otherwise fitness has to catch up to me eventually 🤷‍♂️ It’s mostly the muscular conditioning that’s not up to speed, and that should improve quickly as I get in a few more sessions and long runs on the road.

I’m applying an overall change to my approach to training in 2021. Instead of pushing mileage combined with fewer and harder sessions, I’m aiming for at least two, more controlled quality sessions per week, at a more manageable total weekly volume. For these sessions in particular, that means running them at HR 5-10 bpm lower than I’ve done in the past. That leaves the intensity between the high end of Moderate (z3) and Threshold (z4). 16 km/h increasing to 16.2 and 16.4 the last ten minutes. Noticeably harder in the Hyperion Tempo compared to the VF and RC Elite!
