My oh my. Need many things to go right the next 11 weeks for a hope of improving my marathon PB. Not least of all nutrition. Had to stop and walk a couple of kilometres to avoid shitting my pants. And no less than three more toilet breaks after that! Need to tweak and tune everything, but one thing is crystal clear: Caffeine is off the table, during the race, and in the last two-three hours leading into it. Stomach just can't handle working on it while running. Other than that, I need at least 2h 30min long runs each week for the next eight weeks. I'm a long, long way off the requisite muscular endurance to convert my general fitness to the marathon. Lastly, based on today, my right bottom-of-calf/top-of-Achilles is not entirely well. Very, very stiff towards the end, and now afterwards. No room at all for that to cause trouble. Now, time to watch Berlin and cheer from afar! 🏃♂️🏃🏾♀️

Nike Vaporfly 3 vs Adidas Adios Pro 3. AP3 on reps 1, 3, and 5, VF3 on reps 2 and 4. Two faster 400s to close out, with the first one in AP3 in 73 sec, and the last one in VF3 in 70 sec. Undecided on who comes out on top here. The Adios Pro 3 has a tighter fit and is more cushioned in the forefoot. The Vaporfly 3 is lighter, softer, and has a more breathable upper. I really enjoy the generously cushioned forefoot feel in the Adios. And the snugger fit of the upper. But somehow it feels like I’m working ever so slightly harder to maintain pace compared to the Vaporfly 🤔 Maybe it’s the lower weight? I honestly don’t know. Either way, I feel like the extra cushion of the Adios Pro 3 could come in handy in a marathon, but I’m also absolutely certain that the lower weight of the Vaporfly 3 does matter over 42.2 kilometres. It’s a coin toss, really.

Went a little overboard with that one, and probably should've kept it a little slower. Either way a very solid half marathon specific session. Did bring out the absolute top notch shoes, though, so it may just have been those that made the difference today. Hard to see any other shoes competing with the comfort and pace of the Vaporfly 3, but will give the Adios Pro 3 a chance in a head-to-head session. And what about that Saucony Elite? 🤔

🚦 Yellow light with a shade of red kinda day. Sunday still very much remaining in the legs, and I decided to call it after six of the ten planned reps. Assume these days will come up more often as I try to get push the volume back up again to get ready for another marathon. Have to decide on the most constructive course of action. As I see it, there are three options: 1. Call a workout even earlier, after two-three reps. Jog home, and go all in on recovering. 2. Reduce the volume of the workout to 50-60% of what’s planned, stay within the “normal” pace range for the planned workout. As I did today. 3. Complete the planned workout volume, but reduce pace significantly to avoid digging too deep a hole. Today that would’ve been type 3:50/km instead of 3:35-40. Have to think about that one 🤔

Have to curb the duration and intensity of my long runs in the coming months, if I’m gonna work on threshold and faster paces. And need to get rid of the love handles! Interesting to note for future reference that, on a good classic green light day like this, I can push HR well into zone 5 (>180) before crossing the lactate threshold.

Another shoe comparison test, and there's an undisputed winner here. Two reps in the Vaporfly Next% 2 (1st and 3rd) and two in the Vaporfly 3 (2nd and 4th). Big differences in fit; Next% 2 is more a snugger, more aggressive fit, and significantly narrower through the midfoot than the VF3. Have to wiggle my foot into the N%2, while it slips straight into the VF3. For the VF3 I had to be more conscious about lacing it tightly. Ended up with some heel slippage on the first rep. And that's about the only aspect where the N%2 wins out, in my opinion. No contest otherwise. Heavly legs, and while I was working despite the modest pace on the first rep, I started out way too fast once I got into the VF3. Had to put on the breaks to get somewhat even split times, and comparable data. The VF3 is more cushioned in the forefoot, and feels less aggressive overall. But it has trimmed a couple of grams, and combined with the added cushioning, it makes a difference in comfort. The overall impression also tends more towards comfort rather than speed, which results in a somewhat incogruous experience: If I didn't wear these two shoes on the same day, doing the same thing, and explicitly measure that the VF3 is also FASTER at the same effort level, I would probably insist that the N%2 is the faster shoe. Because it FEELS faster! But, perceived effort is just lower at the same pace in the VF3 compared to the N%2. Splits about dead even with 7:30, 7:29, 7:30, 7:30, and HR numbers about even for reps 2 to 4 at 168 (174), 169 (175), 169 (173) avg (peak). Naturally a bit lower for the first rep. Note to self: A better test protocol is probably 5 x 2000m, with the first rep being discarded from the comparison. Will yield useful HR data for the last for reps. As long as intenisty is controlled, anyways.

Atrocious half marathon DNS today. Utterly lost my cool when I woke up and saw that there had been a snowfall over night. Checked quickly and saw that there was snow on the ground at the site of the race, and decided to not start. Heard afterwards the snow had cleared in time for the start, and conditions had been fine. Embarrassing. At least I got in a decent long run. Wanted to push closer to 40k, but got a rude reminder that you don’t get marathon fit off of a couple of threshold workouts per week.
