Physio’s verdict: 6 to 12 week rehabilitation period with minimal amounts of running, and focus on strength and rehab work and a varied approach to cross-training. Sessions are approved as long as they don’t aggravate the knee noticeably, so will have to make three runs a week count. Will probably end up with two thresholds and a hill. Hopefully that, in conjunction with cross training and strength work, will have me decently fit and fully rehabilitated from any knee injuries come 2021 🤞 Not counting any chickens, though. 15.4 - 16 km/h.

Probably the highest heart race I’ve recorded all year! Felt pretty hard towards the end, too. Hard work! Decided to do this workout closer to home, instead of driving half an hour each way to avoid the undulation. Happy enough with how I came through the MP segment of the run. Averaged 3:43 min/km despite the elevation. That said, I was probably working harder than marathon effort if I’m being honest. A bit of a miss nutrition-wise, however. Some stomach trouble early on, so Maurten drink mix looks to be a no go. Additionally, I overdid the total calorie intake the first hour, with one Maurten gel 15 minutes before starting, one at 30 minutes and one at 60 minutes, in addition to .5 litres of Maurten drink mix. Could not get another gel down after that, and struggled with some serious nausea the last 30 minutes. Barfed a little in my mouth 🤢 a couple of times, and was seriously considering just calling in then and there. Happy to have gotten through the planned session despite the challenges. Verdict on the Alphafly after first run: Bad blisters on both heels, and I’m not sure they are much of an upgrade on the Vaporfly Next% for me. Will try thicker socks next time, and if that doesn’t work I guess I’m running the marathon in the Vaporfly.

The inexplicable ups and downs of a marathon training block. Thursday I couldn’t finish my workout, three days later I get the best long run of the cycle. Felt great throughout, and could comfortably have gone through the marathon distance at this pace today. Fitness starting to come around? Maurten gels at 30, 60, 90 (caffeine) and 120 minutes, plus one Maurten 160 drink mix (0.5 litres) the first hour. Around 0.8 litres of water the last 80 minutes. Stomach handled that well, and energy levels were good throughout.

Oof, this is marathon training. Legs were logs after the 18 km segment around marathon effort. Much improved over a similar session only two weeks ago, both in terms of feeling, perceived effort and, of course, pace. Averaged 3:41 and 298 watts for the 18 kilometres at MP. Apart from a short water break, pretty much all splits were in the range of 3:38-3:42. Felt slightly sluggish at the start, but really grew into the session, and was damned near comfortable through the second half. I think this isn’t too far off what might be realistic in a race setting six weeks from today, given everything goes according to plan up until then. Which is a big if. No HR data to gauge to the effort, on account of the strap seemingly not connecting at all. Just junk wrist HR numbers. Maurten gels at 30, 60 and 90 minutes (all regular). Got some side stitches between 60 and 90, which probably means I’m not drinking enough water. Need to bring a few more bottles next time, to spread them out for easier access.

Because its not really a proper long run unless it’s the longest of the week. I learned that from Uncle Pfitz. Hard work. Legs felt horribly heavy from the start, but found a bit of a (heavy) rhythm around half way. Race from the weekend is probably still taking its toll, but maybe this is what marathon training really feels like? I seem to forget after each time. Great race, acceptable performance. Can't be disappointed with a PB, as they say. 17:13 and 17:08 for a 5 second negative split. Latched on to two guys and got the race perfectly set up for me without doing any work whatsoever. Ran strictly by power. Aiming for around 300 W, which is at the lower end of the threshold zone (293-325 W). Splits were: (297, 298, 298), 273, (302, 303, 303), 266, (305, 300, 301) Good workout. The varying splits show how useful the Stryd is for these kinds of sessions, accounting for both slope and wind. The second 3k has a slower grade adjusted pace, but that doesn’t account for a significant headwind (6-10% AirPower) like the power number does. That said, I am significantly more comfortable, mechanically and in terms of perceived effort, running slightly uphill at 3:50/km pace than I am at 3:30-pace slightly downhill.

Disappointing. Hoped and thought I would run 30 seconds faster. No excuses, just not good enough. Felt decent for about two laps, before the pace started slipping and I just could not pull it back together. Lousy day at the track. Felt strained from the first rep, but thought I would have enough to get through the six planned reps. Legs went midway through the fourth rep, and there was no way I was getting through two more anywhere near target pace, so I called it. Target was around 2:38, and splits were 2:37, 37, 37, 39. In hindsight I probably should've seen that heart rate was too high during, and not recovering quick enough between reps. Better days to come.

Died a little through kilometres 3 and 4, and I thought sub-17 might slip away. But managed to eke out a decent final 1000m, and close with the fastest split. No ankles were injured during this run. Knee unhappy past two hours. Which was about fifteen minutes after I declared myself injury free 😂 Hard work the last 5k or so, to get back in time! Good finish to a great week of training. First time back close to the 70 mile mark since before Berlin. Crunch time next after the slight setback with the knee here, and a 5k time trial coming up. First real yardstick of current fitness level. Not terrible. Stryd consistently underreported the distance with about 3% (1.93km vs 2.00km) which is annoying seeing as how it was spot on the last time I tested on the track. Actual splits and paces for the reps are 7:15 (3:38), 7:14 (3:37), and 7:10 (3:35). Went out too hot for all three reps, and slowed a little towards the end. Hard work, but spot on with the intensity. Another month of solid training should get me back into decent shape again. Fingers crossed the knee will hold up from here-on out. Felt fine today, but let's see how I pull up.

Plan was 70 minutes, but called it as soon as a I felt a tinge in the knee. No problems during the strength exercises afterwards, but upping the cumulative load significantly this week, so it's unnecessary to take any chances during any single session. Stryd also agrees with treadmill pace. But it turns out that there's just in excess of 4% incline when the treadmill is set to flat, as measured by my iPhone level. That matches pretty well to what I'd expect based on HR and perceived effort.

First thing resembling a workout in months. As expected legs not very willing to turn it on, but it’ll come if I can just get in a few weeks of decent training. Knee pretty bad second half of the run, but OK afterwards. First real run in the Reebok Floatride Run Fast. It’s not the Vaporfly, but if the Vaporfly is banned this is a decent option for a marathon shoe. Pebax foam is quite clearly the secret sauce.
